Seasonal Commentary

We started experimenting with an algorithm called wave function collapse, in combination with our base building system, to procedurally generate complex buildings. The design went through several iterations before we landed on exactly what we wanted to do with the technology. We started making abandoned bases for players to clean out and restore, but in the end what appealed was creating Mos Eisley-feeling settlements populated by aliens. This became Frontiers. Creating and rendering these settlements was a huge undertaking, the culmination of years of work and really pushed what was possible with our engine. It opened up a lot of possibilities for the future. After years of positive reviews, our rating progressed from "Mixed" to "Mostly Positive". A huge milestone for the team, we made "Mostly Positive" t-shirts for everyone, which is basically just a good message on a tee.
